- GM’s note: Continuing on the Starfighter Academy story arc, with Grant sailing through things and Ethan getting into trouble as usual.
Part 1 - Hop 3 - Big Game Hunting
- Ethan is having trouble sleeping. It has been over a week since Lt Danika Arlen (callsign “Dagger”) requested political asylum and he is sure that she is still on Draconis Station (thanks to Wayfinding). Rather than assist her shipmates who are out there somewhere in the Kripka Cluster, the ‘powers that be’ have incarcerated her. He gets up in the middle of the night, a crazy idea coming into his mind. He wants to talk to her.
- Draconis Station is busy at all times of the day or night but the ‘night shift’ is quieter and there are fewer people around. Ethan uses ‘his nose’ (Wayfinding) to hunt her down. He concludes that she is not being held in normal detention cells like other prisoners and that she is being held in a location ‘off the grid’ by personnel who are not part of Draconis Station’s regular security forces. As such, he goes hunting for Maki and finds that she too is on the station. However, Maki and her allies are not enough for him to nail down exactly where “Dagger” is being held in a single night.
- That morning, “Deadeye”, “Chance” and “Woody” find that they will be heading out for ‘Hop 3’, not rejoining Thermic for another boring day of customs inspection. “Chance” says nothing about that he has been out for a good portion of the night.
- Hop 3 is the third official assessment at Starfighter Academy. It is designed to simulate a real strike mission. Outpost Diyi is serving as the ‘target’ and there will be an enemy fighter screen in place. The cadets are in groups of four, and “Cobra” will be joining the team for this hop. Two of the cadets are assigned Strike duties with the other two serving as Escort. The Strike elements are scored for simulated ‘hits’ on the target (Outpost Diyi) whilst the Escorts are scored for enabling the Strike elements to carry out their assigned task. Points are also awarded for shooting down enemy fighters. All of the cadets are assigned rocket pods which would mimic real assault rockets.
- “Chance” is assigned to Strike, with “Woody” serving as his escort.
- “Cobra” is also assigned to Strike, with “Deadeye” serving as her escort.

- The route to Outpost Diyi (around Kalamos) is a long trip out – almost ten hours. As they start their attack run, they are intercepted by two instructors who serve as the outer defence – “Red” and “Marlin”. The cadets swing into action and “Chance” kills “Red” on the way in. They break their way into the inner defences with “Marlin” hot on “Cobra”s tail. In the inner zone, they encounter the Academy’s top instructors – “Judge” and “Blank”. “Deadeye” clears a path for “Chance” and “Chance” scores a hit on the target. “Cobra” has to deal with “Marlin” first whilst “Deadeye” and “Blank” square off against one another.
- Finally, “Deadeye” gets the better of “Blank” with a Split-S and shoots him down. “Woody” provides a clear path for “Cobra” who takes the shot and successfully hits the target a second time. Meanwhile, “Chance” has gone after “Judge” and successfully scores damage on her ship before she pulls a Pugachev’s Cobra and ‘slams the brakes on’, causing “Chance” to fly by. “Judge” chases down “Chance” but cannot seem to score a hit on him. (GM’s note – Ethan is the best pilot of the four) “Bingo” is called and the scenario ends.
- In the debrief, “Judge” praises the four of them whilst “Blank” offers critical feedback. They head back to base – a long long trip.
- They arrive back at base very late. Most of the other cadets are still on their “Hop 3” assessments and aren’t back yet. “Deadeye” and “Woody” decide to call it a day and get some sleep. However, “Chance” uses the opportunity to sneak out again. Unfortunately, he runs into trouble as his snooping around puts him into conflict with a handful of local thugs who mistake him for some sort of undercover officer. Forgetting that he is supposed to be maintaining a low profile, “Chance” enjoys the opportunity for some midnight violence and he knocks them flying.
Part 2 - Debriefing and Night Ops
- The next day all of the cadets are called together. “Judge” and “Blank” spend time reviewing the recordings of their various attacks and talking through what worked and what didn’t. “Deadeye” listens but he is also pleased that he’s on top of the ladder, with “Chance” as No.2. With “Birdie” gone, there is no one else that is even close.
- It is a relatively relaxed day compared to other days that they’ve had recently. “Deadeye” notes that “Chance” is distracted – he assumes incorrectly that “Chance” is thinking about Nicole. However, “Chance” is figuring out how he’s going to find exactly where “Dagger” is being held, and he’s using Wayfinding (and Psyche) to try and logically figure it out.
- When it comes to going out that evening, “Chance” isn’t interested in partying. He puts in an appearance at the Spacers’ Bar but his mind is elsewhere. However, before he can slip away, “Woody” strikes up a conversation with him. “Woody” has always been rather reserved around “Deadeye” and “Chance” but she seems genuinely interested in getting to know “Chance” better given that he knows her secret. “Deadeye” notes the conversation between “Woody” and “Chance” and assumes that “Chance” is okay after all. He goes off to play pool with “Mayhem” for a bit.
- “Chance” finds himself admitting to “Woody” that he’s been thinking a lot about the defector and how wrong it is to be incarcerating her when her shipmates are in distress. To his surprise, “Woody” offers to help if she can and “Chance” says that he’ll keep it in mind. “Woody” opens up about some of her past but “Chance” is unable to reciprocate as it wouldn’t make much sense to her. He focuses instead on telling “Woody” that he’s looking forward to a good life here in the 26 Draconis system.
- “Deadeye” and “Chance” talk later in the evening. “Deadeye” asks if he is okay and “Chance” shrugs it off. Over a drink he points out the craziness of the situation – all of these ‘kids’ who want to be fighter pilots because their families wanted them here. “Chance” refers to some things that aren’t right here (which are bugging him) but he lightens up when he mentions the Hot Spot. With a crooked smile, he says that he quite likes the girlie place.
- “Deadeye” mentions the fringes of the station where lowlifes hang out. “Chance” lies and says that he’s never been there (even though he got into trouble the previous night when poking around). “Deadeye” also mentions finding a dead body – a murder committed weeks ago. “Chance” shows interest in this and remarks that it’s only a matter of time before the locals figure out that we can ‘find stuff’.
- This comment takes “Deadeye” by surprise, and “Chance” ventures that the defector that they met over a week ago is still on the station. “Chance” says that it’s weird but he doesn’t tell “Deadeye” of his crazy idea to find and talk to her. “Chance” leaves and goes for a run to ‘clear his head’.
- When “Chance” has gone, “Deadeye” realises just how happy drunk his fellow cadets are (basking in the glow of Hop 3). “Blazer” is more drunk than usual – she’s dancing on one of the tables to the jeers and cheers of the other cadets. Shaking his head, “Deadeye” decides to leave the party and head to the gym.
- “Chance” spends more time that evening trying to track “Dagger” down. He decides to find and tail Maki (which is a difficult challenge in itself as she is an experienced operative) in the hope that Maki will lead him to “Dagger”. He ends up in an off-limits section of the station which is guarded and decides to keep his distance. He is pretty sure that the hangar which Maki’s group is using is in this restricted area, and “Dagger” is there as well.
Part 3 - Another Day, Another Inspection
- The next day the cadets are back with “Thermic” and off on another series of routine inspections. With them are cadets “Iceman”, “Blazer” and “Loser” who are flying escort. They hear that “Iceman” deftly extricated “Blazer” from the bar on the previous night before she fell off the table and broke something.
- They pick up an inbound freighter’s signature only two hours into the op. The Earlybird II is a large vessel carrying high performance batteries and bound for the processing station in orbit around the ice-planet Asami. They go through the usual routine in inspecting this ship that has come from Gamma Corvus in the Republic. The captain, a large black fellow named Luther, is unfriendly but he grudgingly lets the cadets perform their inspection. “Deadeye” finds that the batteries are huge, which makes the inspection relatively easy. He finds no sign of contraband and the ship is allowed to continue on its journey.
- The rest of the day is pretty boring. “Deadeye” wonders how the other cadets are going on their patrols in their Blackfish star fighters. On the way back, they fly reasonably close to the Draconis Hull Yards and note that there is a lot of activity going on. It looks like the renovations of the DCS Lion are close to completion. There also seems to be activity from the restricted hangar on Draconis Station. “Thermic” gives the restricted hangar a wide berth but “Deadeye” tries to peek a little on the scanners. He notes that there are a lot of shuttles, personnel and equipment in that hangar bay.
- Arriving back, they find the 80s hits from Ethan’s Walkman being played in the hangar bay. This time it’s clearly Pat Benatar belting out “Love is a Battlefield”. In the bay, “Hustler” is working on repairing a damaged Blackfish. It looks like there are more damaged ships than there were two days ago. ”Deadeye” decides to lend a hand with the repairs. He notes the leaderboard in the hangar bay which shows the number of confirmed kills. “Toad” from Axion Squadron leads the kill total, with “Nok” from Tachyon Squadron in second place. To his pleasant surprise, he is listed on the leaderboard, although a long way down the list.
Part 4 - Nocturnal Activities
- “Chance” finds “Cobra” waiting for him at the beginning of his run but he isn’t particularly interested in talking to her. She offers an apology. “Chance” accepts the apology but has clearly moved on in his own mind. The run is uncomfortable because he finds her distracting and he would prefer to be thinking about how he is going to get access to the restricted hangar bay and find “Dagger”. They part at the end of the run.
- Still needing time to think, “Chance” ends up at the Spacers’ Bar where he ends up sharing a quiet drink with “Woody”. “Woody” asks what is on his mind and “Chance” says that he’d like some space away from “Cobra”. “Woody” chuckles - apparently she doesn’t like “Cobra” either, but her reasoning is different. “Woody” comes from a military family and she is doing her duty to follow in her father’s and brothers’ footsteps. “Cobra” isn’t part of noble or military families - her family are merchants and her family is effectively trying to ‘buy’ respectability via her service. Also, “Woody”s family came from the Republic so they’re a bit wary of merchants who got rich by selling to both sides during the war.
- After time at the gym, “Deadeye” heads to the Spacers’ Bar. He spots “Chance” and “Woody” chatting away. He goes to buy a drink and join them but is interrupted by Baker. Baker is in a very good mood - he’s just won a considerable amount of money by gambling and he wants to share his good fortune with his fellow cadets. Drinks are bought. The other cadets are only too eager to join in. Everyone seems to be in a good mood. “Mayhem” and “Hustler” talk with “Deadeye” about going to the Hot Spot later in the evening.
- “Deadeye” notes that some of the cadets are playing arcade games - “Cobra”, “Proton” and “Loser” are playing a hover-bike racing game. “Deadeye” watches with interest and “Loser” gives him a wink.
- The merriment continues as Baker’s continues to pay for drinks. “Loser” makes a pass at “Deadeye” which makes it clear to him that she’s interested in him. Everyone seems to be having fun and “Deadeye” notes after some time that “Chance” and “Woody” have slipped away (again!). However, before he can go after them, he is bustled out of the Spacers’ Bar by “Mayhem” and “Hustler” and let off to the Hot Spot.
- The bouncer at the Hot Spot recognises “Mayhem” and “Hustler” - none of them have to pay to enter. On the first visit “Deadeye” was pretty cool on the girlie bar, but he decides on the second visit that he does like the place. “Mayhem” is right - the girls from Callisto 2119 are beautiful. “Deadeye” finds a companion for the evening and has a very good time. Fade to black.
- Meanwhile, “Chance” has enlisted “Woody”s help in locating “Dagger”. He doesn’t plan to put “Woody” in danger but he figures that she can at least help him to narrow down where “Dagger” is located (without breaking any rules). They observe from the edge of the restricted zone and discuss possibilities. However, “Woody” warns him that if he is detected going further that he risks his military career and possibly his life (they make take him for a Dominion spy). Heeding “Woody”s words, “Chance” decides to back off.
- As they head back to the barracks and their bunks, “Chance” gets the feeling that Maki is nearby and is diverted to find out what she is doing. He finds her having a meal in one of Draconis Station’s many eateries and decides to avoid rather than confront her. Following her from a distance using Wayfinding yields no new leads and he feels that he has wasted his time.
Part 5 - Busted
- “Deadeye” returns to his bunk to find that neither “Woody” nor “Chance” are back. It’s very late - he wonders where they are. Using Wayfinding he can tell roughly where they are (in the station complex) but he has no idea what they are up to. He decides to forget about it and tries to get some sleep.
- The next day they are back with “Thermic” for another day’s customs inspections. However, the three cadets are told to report to “Judge”s office - they are not told why - however, the head of the Aggressor Squadron is an important person at Starfighter Academy and not someone to trifle with.
- “Deadeye” is sent in first. The conversation is quick. She asks how he is doing and whether he is having any problems. “Deadeye” is surprised by the questions and tells her all is fine. He is allowed to leave.
- “Woody” is sent in next. “Judge” asks her how she is going but the conversation quickly turns to telling her to stay away from restricted areas and the importance of following orders. She is allowed to leave.
- “Chance” is sent in last. “Judge” starts off asking him about his wellbeing, but “Chance” can sense that she suspects something and that she is, at some level, afraid of him. (GM’s note - the benefit of having Dominant Rank Psyche) “Judge” asks if he has a sleeping problem. She points out that he’s been out regularly, and lack of sleep is likely to affect his performance. “Chance” asks her if they can talk privately and “Judge” agrees. (He knows immediately that she is lying) “Chance” asks why the Dominion pilot who defected is still on the station and why they have not rendered assistance to her crew or provided assistance to a vessel which she claims is in need. “Judge” tenses and points out that they’re under orders not to discuss this matter. “Chance” asks if she always keeps a handgun in her hover-chair or is it just because of him. She stiffens. “Chance” looks around the room and spots a camera. Pointing out that this isn’t a private conversation, he says hello to Maki who he is sure is listening. “Judge” changes tact and says that she’ll overlook the insubordination for the time being. She asks why he thinks Maki is listening. “Chance” answers too quickly and confirms that he is sure that she is nearby, but he confesses that he isn’t sure of the other person that is in the room with Maki. “Judge” isn’t sure if “Chance” is bluffing or not and asks if he is psychic. “Chance” brushes away the label but he admits that he doesn’t know what to call whatever he does.
- “Judge” asks about where “Chance” came from, and “Chance” gives his standard answer. However, he also emphasises that he is keen to start a new life on Draconis. “Judge” turns her attention to the defector and says that she can’t answer his question. She admits that she was a loyal Dominion fighter pilot before she joined the Red Fist, a group within the Dominion who resists from within. She says that it made her a marked woman. She was lucky enough to join the Draconis armed forces when they declared independence - but this situation is different - these defectors are active serving members of the Dominion of Unity and the Dominion does not recognise Draconis’ independence. Only the Republic recognises Draconis’ independence. She suspects that it may be fear of what will happen if Dominion defectors are given refuge here.
- “Chance” senses that “Judge” would also like to help the defector but she’s not in a position to do so. Her explanation makes sense - he recognises it as likely to be true but he didn’t want to believe it because these are people who need help and have taken a huge risk to request it. He asks to be involved when the ‘higher ups’ decide that the timing is right. “Judge” nods, acknowledging his request and changes the topic and asks if “Chance” likes to play cards. “Chance” points out that he should be helping with the prep of the ‘Pug’ but he acknowledges that he likes to play from time to time. He offers to get them for her (given that she is bound to a hover-chair) and she agrees. He goes to a nearby drawer and retrieves the cards, realising that he’s just revealed not only that he is able to Wayfind but also that he can open a locked drawer without a key. Sensing that Maki is indeed watching him through the camera, he guesses another person who is watching the feed with her. “Judge” takes the cards, shuffles them and deals each of them three cards. He is asked to guess what is in her hand and he deliberately fluffs it. “Judge” puts the cards away, orders him to stay away from the restricted area and not to talk about the defector. She dismisses him.
- “Chance” realises that he botched the entire meeting with “Judge”. Not only did he reveal some of what he can do, but then he misled her at the end in such a way which would probably mean that she would now distrust him. He decides to stop pursuing “Dagger”, at least for the time being.
Part 6 - The Flying Squirrel
- “Thermic” is less than amused at being held up. “Chance” is directed to get on board and the four of them head out in the pug with Baker, “Mayhem” and “Hustler” flying escort. It’s the same deal as previous days however “Mayhem” and “Hustler” are more talkative, much to “Thermic”s annoyance.
- Four hours in, they are ordered to intercept a large freighter journeying from Callisto 2119 (Dominion space). The freighter ‘Flying Squirrel’ is bound for Draconis Station and carrying a consignment of jetcopters. Captain Ball is a wiry, nervous looking man who doesn’t like the inspection, but his cargo is legal and the cadets do not detect any infractions.
- Returning to Draconis Station, “Chance” decides to reply to Nicole and asks her to visit after Hop 4 is finished (in about two weeks). He decides to write to her, perhaps get to know her a little better.
- That evening, “Deadeye” spends time exploring the musical history of this realm. There are no equivalent 80s songs but there are similar rock tunes of the time. “Deadeye” decides to eat in the mess rather than go out. He finds “Chance” and “Cobra” sitting at the same table, but they are hardly speaking to each other.
- “Deadeye” decides to go and see a movie in the cinema. It’s a new blockbuster called “Fighter Wing 207” from Dominion space which depicts the fascist rule as the good guys, with the baddies being rebels who defy the rule of law. Good defeats evil, and good gets the girl. But there is no Hollywood happy ending. The hero has an enduring duty to the people and must leave the girl, effectively sacrificing love for duty. “Deadeye” enjoys the movie but the subtext is disturbing.
- The Spacers’ Bar is quiet that evening. “Proton”, “Ajax” and “Cobra” are there, along with “Hammer” and “Boomer” from Tachyon Squadron. “Deadeye” decides to talk to “Hammer” and “Boomer”. “Hammer” is a woman with short cropped brown hair and tanned skin. “Boomer” is an Asian lady with a pretty face. Both have heard of “Deadeye” and the conversation is pleasant. They ask if “Thermic” is good to work with, or a ‘pain’.
- Meanwhile, “Chance” has had an unpleasant experience on his run. A man was waiting for him at the end of this exercise programme. The man wanted to talk to him about an athletics competition where athletes from the Republic, the Dominion and from 26 Draconis would compete. “Chance” was interested but the man had a squat dog with him that decided to take a bite out of his leg. The result was torn trousers and “Chance” was very pissed off indeed. (GM’s note - Bad Stuff)
- “Chance” comes to the Spacers’ Bar and gets talking to “Proton”. “Proton” is a bit spooked - his squad picked up the signature of a Dominion Battlecruiser in the Kripka Cluster. A Battlecruiser is much larger than the Destroyer or Frigates that Draconis has. This is a most worrying sign.
- “Chance” and “Deadeye” acknowledge each other but “Deadeye” keeps talking to “Hammer” and “Boomer”. He realises that “Chance”s observations regarding the cadets and Tachyon Squadron seem to be correct. “Hammer” grew up here on Draconis and fought for the Dominion in the last war. “Boomer” emigrated here from the Republic but she fought on the Republic side. Both are professionals who don’t care about your background, only that you can fly, do your job and be relied upon. They don’t care about the politics or backgrounds - they are professional fighter-pilots.
- “Deadeye” tells them about the movie that he just saw and asks about how the Republic and Dominion societies differ. They talk about it. Draconis itself is more Dominion than Republic, but it is a fusion of both cultures.
- “Proton” eventually calls it quits and “Chance” goes to the pool table. “Deadeye” excuses him and the two play a few games of pool. They talk for a while. “Deadeye” asks about what “Judge” said to him (she took a long time) and “Chance” says that he was told not to talk about the person that they’d been instructed not to talk about before. He asks about “Chance”s torn trouser leg and “Chance” explains about the dog. “Deadeye” asks him if he has a ‘thing’ with “Woody” and “Chance” roars with laughter. He promises “Deadeye” that there is nothing funny going on between them. Noting that “Cobra” has left for the evening, “Chance” admits that he feels better when “Cobra” is not in the room. “Deadeye” points out that “Chance” is acting very strangely, but “Chance” tells him that he thinks he has it straight in his head now. He’s trying not to think too hard about anything. They have three good games of pool - “Deadeye” wins two of them.
Part 7 - The Long Day
- The next day they are back in the ‘Pug’ on another long-range intercept. A medium sized freighter is heading towards the Arcosolari Kalamos, a space station nicknamed the ‘Arco’. The ‘Dark Shadow’ is en route from Callisto 2119 in Dominion Space and carrying service robots. The pug is escorted by “Radar”, “Ajax” and “Cobra”.
- It is a long twelve hours to reach the vessel (Kalamos is a long way out) and the Dark Shadow has almost reached the Arco before it is intercepted. The boarding party is welcomed onboard by Captain Maggar, and “Deadeye” goes with one of the crew to inspect the cargo. “Deadeye” quickly figures out that all is not what it seems - there are weapons on board and some of the service robots are warbots (battle robots). A shootout breaks out in the hold. “Woody” and “Chance” come under fire on the bridge of the ‘Dark Shadow’. By the time “Deadeye” has dealt with his attacker in the hold and returned to the bridge, he finds that “Woody” and “Chance” are in the middle of a fierce gun battle. The pilot is dead, Captain Maggar is slumped against one wall and the crew are shooting at them from multiple directions. “Deadeye” throws a concussion grenade into the crew quarters, they rush the survivors and the fight is over very quickly. Five enemy dead. Three enemy prisoners, including the Captain.
- “Thermic” quickly takes charge of the situation, confirming the presence of contraband onboard. Contraband that would likely arm whatever loyalist forces exist on the Arco. This is an explosive situation - they must impound the ship immediately but they have to find who was going to receive the cargo on the Arco.
